Minecraft is getting its first new dimension in over 14 years. Mojang announced during Minecraft LIVE on September 26 that The Sift is coming to Java and Bedrock Edition in 2027, joining the Overworld, the Nether, and the End as the game’s official fourth dimension. The reveal marked one of the biggest updates in the game’s history, closing out the live event with a brief in-development look at the new reality.
The Sift will first be playable in Minecraft Dungeons II, launching September 29, giving players an early taste of its mobs, blocks, and biomes before it arrives in the main game. Described by developers as a “beautiful, vibrant” dimension “teeming with souls,” it features new biomes including Meadows and Carapace, along with a distinct red-and-orange color palette and lush green vegetation. Unlike the Nether and the End, which are designed as hostile challenges, creative director Mans Olson said the team wanted The Sift to feel like “a place where you could see yourself living”, a different kind of Overworld rather than another “evil” dimension.
Mojang has kept most details under wraps, including how players will access The Sift in the main game, which mobs will carry over, and how its mechanics will work in vanilla Minecraft. The End was the last dimension added, arriving in November 2011 with version 1.0, making this the first new dimension since the game officially left beta. While Mojang has confirmed a 2027 release window for Java and Bedrock, no specific month or version number has been announced.
