The Michael Jackson biopic ended its global theatrical run at $1.028 billion, making it the highest-grossing biopic ever and the fourth-biggest movie of 2026. The Michael biopic billion milestone caps a remarkable run for the film, which surpassed Bohemian Rhapsody to claim the biopic record earlier in its release.
The film also became Lionsgate’s highest-grossing release and the studio’s first billion-dollar movie, surpassing The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2. Directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson as his uncle, Michael opened to a record-breaking $97.2 million debut weekend in April and never slowed down. It has now joined an elite club of only a handful of films to cross $1 billion worldwide.
The film’s success extends beyond the box office. A sequel is already in development, and Lionsgate has credited the project with revitalizing its theatrical slate. Michael remains in some international markets but has concluded its wide global run. It finishes 2026 behind only The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and two other titles in the year’s global rankings.
