Lionsgate is moving ahead with a sequel to its billion-dollar Michael Jackson biopic Michael, and it might arrive sooner than expected. The studio is eyeing a release window in late 2027 or the first half of 2028.

The quick turnaround is possible because the sequel won’t be starting from scratch. During the studio’s earnings call, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Adam Fogelson revealed that “a number of sequences, particularly some big musical sequences, that were shot previously” will likely be incorporated into the second film. The studio is aiming to begin production towards the end of 2026 or early 2027.

While there’s no official greenlight yet, Fogelson noted the team is focused on delivering “the biggest, best sequel” audiences deserve. Jaafar Jackson is expected to reprise his role as his late uncle.
