Meghan Markle’s rumored return to acting has reportedly been withdrawn following heavy backlash in the UK, according to royal author and former Vanity Fair editor Tina Brown. The decision comes just days after reports surfaced that the Duchess of Sussex was in talks for a role in the Netflix series The Gentlemen.

Brown, the former editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair and The New Yorker, reported the decision was made following intense public and media criticism in Britain. On her Substack, she wrote: “The backlash in the UK was so intense, it became untenable to go forward.” She suggested that the negative reaction made it impossible for the project to move forward with Meghan attached.

This would have been Meghan’s first on-screen role since her last appearance on the legal drama Suits in 2017, just before she stepped back from acting to join the royal family. The part was reportedly a cameo in the Guy Ritchie-produced series, which had already garnered significant attention following its previous seasons.

The news comes as Prince Harry and Meghan prepared to relocate to the UK with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, for what has been described as an extended stay. The acting opportunity was said to be one of the reasons behind the move. Now, with the role reportedly withdrawn, questions remain about what comes next for the Duchess’s professional ambitions.
