Megan Thee Stallion has been granted a five-year restraining order against Tory Lanez, who is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for shooting her in the feet in July 2020. The decision was made after Megan testified via livestream, expressing her ongoing fear for her safety.

During her emotional testimony, Megan, whose legal name is Megan Pete, told the Los Angeles court:

“I haven’t been at peace since I was shot… I’m scared that when he gets out of jail, he’s going to still be upset with me. I feel like maybe he’ll shoot me again, and maybe this time I won’t make it.”

Megan also alleged that Lanez has been orchestrating harassment campaigns against her from prison, using third parties to smear her reputation. A petition claimed that prison call logs from the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi provided evidence of Lanez coordinating these efforts.

Court’s Decision

Judge Richard Bloom ruled in favor of Megan, granting her a restraining order that prohibits Lanez from engaging in any harassing conduct for the next five years. The judge noted:

“We have a shooting that took place… and with a violent act like that, there’s a ripple effect that continues on. Ms. Pete’s testimony here seems to make clear that the ripple effect has been significant.”

The order bans Lanez from making any form of contact with Megan or engaging in any behavior that could be considered harassment.

Lanez’s Defense

Lanez’s attorney, Michael Hayden, argued that his client was not threatening Megan, claiming instead that the criticism she faces stems from independent bloggers whom Lanez cannot control. Hayden also suggested that granting the restraining order could violate Lanez’s First Amendment rights.

However, Megan refuted this, stating:

“I’m not trying to take anyone’s free speech away, but I am trying to stop the man who shot me from continuing to orchestrate lies and smear campaigns against me.”

Background

Lanez was convicted in December 2022 of three charges:

• Assault with a semiautomatic firearm

• Carrying a concealed, loaded, and unregistered firearm in a vehicle

• Discharging a firearm with gross negligence

Despite maintaining his innocence, Lanez’s conviction has stood, though he was granted the right to appeal the judgment in July 2024.

The restraining order is another chapter in the high-profile case that has captured public attention, highlighting issues of violence, harassment, and accountability in the entertainment industry.
