Manchester City heads into their Boxing Day showdown with Everton facing uncertainty over key players Ederson and Matheus Nunes. Pep Guardiola’s side, still reeling from their recent 2-1 loss to Aston Villa, may have to shuffle their lineup once again.
Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson missed the Villa clash, leaving Stefan Ortega to step in between the sticks. Matheus Nunes, who played left-back in City’s defeat to Manchester United earlier this month, also sat out against Villa and remains a doubt for Thursday’s game.
Speaking during Tuesday’s press conference, Guardiola didn’t offer much clarity. “We train this afternoon, and we’ll see how many players we have available,” he said. “Right now, I don’t know.”
The injury concerns don’t end there. John Stones, forced off at halftime during the Villa match, is another potential absentee. Guardiola acknowledged the situation, saying: “If he couldn’t continue in the second half at Villa Park, it’s likely he won’t be ready, but we’ll see.”
In preparation for the Everton match, Guardiola revealed a tight schedule for his squad during the festive period. Players spent Christmas Eve and part of Christmas Day with their families before returning to train on Christmas night. “Hopefully, they want to be here because it’s our job and our duty,” Guardiola added.
As for Everton, the Toffees will be without Ashley Young, who is suspended, and Dwight McNeil, who remains doubtful after a recent injury. Manager Sean Dyche confirmed, “Youngy is out with a neck issue, but he should be fine soon. Dwight is still touch-and-go, probably not ready for this one.”
With both sides grappling with injuries, the Boxing Day clash promises to be a test of depth and resilience. All eyes will be on Guardiola’s lineup decisions as City looks to bounce back from consecutive defeats and keep their Premier League campaign on track.
