The interview was recorded before the lawsuit became public. When Gayle King asked Tenisha Warner about her relationship with her mother-in-law, Pamela, she grew distant. “The emotional capacity that I have can be very limited sometimes,” she said. “Whatever I have to give, the first person to get that is my daughter. And then the second is myself.” King later admitted she found Tenisha’s evasive response “telling.”
On the first anniversary of Malcolm-Jamal’s drowning, Tenisha filed two lawsuits seeking over $1.2 million from Warner’s family trust. She claims her late husband failed to fulfill their prenuptial agreement: no $1 million life insurance policy naming her beneficiary, no $5,000 monthly chief-of-staff salary, no $16,000 anniversary payments. Warner’s 1996 trust leaves everything to his mother, father, and half-sister, effectively disinheriting his wife and nine-year-old daughter. “Malcolm had every intention to provide for our daughter and me,” Tenisha said. “He was close to finalizing a new estate plan… Sadly, he was unable to do so before we lost him.”
Pamela hasn’t addressed the lawsuit directly, but posted on her son’s memorial account: “I have discovered how cruel, evil and greedy a human can be.”
