Liverpool are preparing to part ways with yet another homegrown talent as Jarell Quansah is set to complete a £30m move to Bayer Leverkusen, with an additional £5m in performance-based add-ons included in the deal.
According to reliable transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, the 22-year-old defender has agreed personal terms with the Bundesliga champions and will undergo his medical on Monday. The only reason for the delay in finalizing the transfer was Quansah’s involvement in the U21 European Championship, where he helped England clinch the title after a win over Germany on Saturday.
This marks the fourth homegrown departure for Liverpool this summer, following the exits of Caoimhin Kelleher, Nat Phillips, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, as the club balances its books to stay within Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
But perhaps the most intriguing detail of the deal is the buy-back clause Liverpool have inserted. While initial reports put the value at £51m, Romano now confirms it’s actually between £60m and £70m, depending on various add-ons. Notably, the Reds can’t activate the clause until 2027, meaning Leverkusen are guaranteed at least two full seasons with the talented centre-back.
This sale adds to Liverpool’s already massive £200m+ summer outlay, with more business still expected. The Reds remain on the hunt for a top-class centre-back, with Marc Guehi their primary target, and a new striker also on the wishlist as the rebuild under Arne Slot continues.
Quansah’s exit may sting in the short term, but Liverpool have ensured they could bring him back—at a price.
