Lilly Wachowski is shedding new light on the unexpected origins of The Matrix—and it turns out the groundbreaking sci-fi classic was born out of a desperate Hail Mary.
In a candid new interview with Collider, the 57-year-old director revealed that The Matrix was only greenlit by Warner Bros. after a studio executive pleaded with her and her sister, Lana Wachowski, to save his job.
“The Matrix was a last-ditch, Hail Mary part of the deal,” Lilly explained. “It was part of a three-picture deal. We were just going to write and direct Bound, and write two other scripts. After Bound, the head of production at the time called us into his office and said, ‘You have to save my job. We need this.’”
Even after turning in the now-iconic script, the Wachowskis weren’t sure how the studio would react. “It was very different from anything else at the time,” Lilly said. “We just wrote the movie we wanted to see.”
Released in 1999, The Matrix quickly became a global phenomenon, grossing over $460 million on a $63 million budget. The cyberpunk classic sparked two direct sequels in 2003, The Matrix Reloadedand The Matrix Revolutions, and expanded into a multimedia franchise with The Animatrix, video games, and graphic novels.
Still, Lilly admitted she and Lana had no idea the film would evolve into a defining piece of modern sci-fi. “We had no idea what it would become. But we knew it was the kind of story we had to tell.”
Starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne, and Hugo Weaving, The Matrixintroduced audiences to the mind-bending world of Neo and the simulated reality controlled by machines.
After nearly two decades of dormancy, the franchise returned in 2021 with The Matrix Resurrections. Now, a fifth installment is officially in development at Warner Bros.—but this time, neither Wachowski sister will direct. The upcoming project will be helmed by The Martian director Drew Goddard, with Lana Wachowski on board as executive producer.
Plot details remain under wraps, but Warner Bros. Motion Pictures chief Jesse Ehrman promises the next chapter will honor the Wachowskis’ legacy while bringing fresh perspective.
“Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue The Matrix world,” Ehrman said, “by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters.”
