Lil Durk Says Feds Changed Their Whole Case Weeks Before Trial

Lil Durk is accusing federal prosecutors of pulling a last-minute bait-and-switch. The Chicago rapper’s legal team says the government spent 19 months building a case around the 2022 murder of Quando Rondo’s cousin in Los Angeles, then completely overhauled it weeks before trial.

His attorneys, Drew Findling and Brian Steel, are now demanding the judge either sever the new allegations or dismiss the entire indictment entirely. A hearing is set for July 27.

For nearly two years, the charges against Durk centered on the August 2022 Beverly Hills gas station shooting that killed Saviay’a “Lul Pab” Robinson. Prosecutors allege Durk ordered hitmen to target Quando Rondo in retaliation for King Von’s 2020 death. The defense was ready for that trial on August 20.

Then, on June 4, the government dropped a Third Superseding Indictment. It added racketeering murder charges and a sprawling new theory that Durk ran a multi-state criminal enterprise involving drug trafficking, robbery, and witness tampering. The indictment also revived a January 2022 Chicago killing that prosecutors had previously said they wouldn’t use, plus a February 2019 Atlanta shooting that had never been included before.

The defense argues the timing violates Durk’s Sixth Amendment right to a speedy trial. He has been locked up since October 2024 and objected to every prior delay. The new evidence, terabytes of data, would force another continuance, a delay his lawyers say is presumptively prejudicial after 21 months in custody.

The defense has called the new indictment “lipstick on a pig” and “a pathetic pivot” by prosecutors with a weak case. They want the judge to let the original August trial move forward and handle the new charges separately, or drop everything.
