Daniel Neeson, the 29-year-old son of actor Liam Neeson and the late Natasha Richardson, is sharing a deeply personal health journey with the world. In an emotional Instagram post on Tuesday, March 3, Daniel revealed that he recently underwent surgery to correct a congenital heart defect, using his platform to advocate for proactive health management.

Neeson was born with a Bicuspid Aortic Valve (BAV), a condition he explained “where the aortic valve has two leaflets instead of the normal three.” According to the Mayo Clinic, BAV is a common congenital heart defect, affecting about 2% of the population. While many live their entire lives without symptoms, the condition requires monitoring as it can lead to valve failure or enlargement of the aorta later in life.

“I knew it was heading toward medical intervention,” Neeson wrote.

In his candid social media post, accompanied by photos of himself and his fiancée, Natalie Ackerman, at the hospital, Neeson detailed his long history with the condition. He explained that he has undergone biannual cardiology check-ups for “most of my life” to keep a close watch on his heart health.

While some people with BAV don’t require surgery until they are much older, Neeson noted that he “drew the early-bird straw.” He began experiencing “severe left ventricle dilation and aortic enlargement,” signaling that the time for medical intervention had arrived. Rather than viewing the operation with fear, he reframed his perspective: “I looked at this operation as a ceremony, not a procedure.”

The core of Neeson’s message resonated deeply with his followers, as he focused on the mental and emotional aspect of facing a major health crisis.

“Nothing is more empowering than understanding your health, staying on top of your game, and planning ahead,” he wrote. “Health is about being proactive, not reactive.”

He spoke about the surreal nature of realizing a challenge had been developing inside him his entire life and emphasized the importance of “surrender.”

“Trusting the universe. Trusting that even if I couldn’t control the outcome, I could control my mindset and my deeper consciousness,” he continued. “Overcoming this wasn’t about being fearless. It was about leaning into the healing energy and being as present as possible.”

Throughout his ordeal, Neeson leaned heavily on his support system. He expressed profound gratitude to his surgical team, specifically praising Dr. Leonard Girardi and the staff at Weill Cornell / New York Presbyterian. He also gave a special shout-out to the ICU nurses, calling them “truly some of the greatest people on the planet.”

Most notably, he thanked his fiancée, Natalie Ackerman, whom he called his “rock.” The couple, who got engaged in September 2025 after eight years of dating, appeared together in the hospital photos, showcasing their bond during a difficult time. He also acknowledged the broader support of his family, which includes his father, Liam, and his older brother, Micheál, 30.

Neeson concluded his post with a powerful call to action for his followers, urging them to be vigilant about their cardiovascular health.

“Everyone should have their hearts checked by a cardiologist, even if they don’t have any known defects,” he advised. “Most importantly, surrender to the present moment. Don’t live in fear.”

The post was met with an outpouring of support from the public and celebrities alike. Actress Laura Linney commented with three red heart emojis, while Bravo host Andy Cohen offered a heartfelt pun, writing, “Your heart is just tooooo big for a normal human being to handle!! 🙌❤️”

As he focuses on recovery, which he describes as a “beautiful, patient, and rewarding” trail, Daniel Neeson’s story serves as a powerful reminder that vulnerability and strength often go hand in hand.
