Ibadan has lost one of its most iconic traditional drummers, Ayangbenle, popularly known as Baba Onilu. The revered drummer, known for his rhythmic mastery and deep cultural influence, passed away overnight.
His son confirmed the news, saying, “Baba Onilu has passed away overnight. May Almighty Allah grant him Aljanah Fidarus.” His father’s final words were, “La Ilaaha Ila lahu.”
A Legacy of Cultural Drumming
Baba Onilu, a native of Ede, Osun State, was a well-known figure in Ibadan’s cultural scene. His drumming played a vital role in major Yoruba festivals, particularly the Osun Osogbo Festival, where he performed as a special drummer for Osun.
Beyond festivals, he was a familiar presence at the University of Ibadan, where he entertained students during convocation ceremonies, and at NYSC camps, where his performances became a highlight for corps members.
Viral Fame and NFT Recognition
In April 2022, Baba Onilu gained national recognition after Adisa Olashile, a corps member and phone photographer, captured stunning images of him.
The photos went viral on Twitter and were later turned into NFTs, selling for 0.3 ETH each (around ₦1 million at the time) on OpenSea. Staying true to his promise, Olashile gave 50% of the earnings (₦500,000) to Baba Onilu, along with an additional ₦100,000 from donations. A framed portrait of the viral image was also presented to him.
A Life Devoted to Drumming
Baba Onilu once shared in an interview that his drumming talent was inherited rather than learned.
“Drumming is the profession of my paternal grandmother’s lineage. I started drumming in Ibadan.”
With decades of dedication, he remained a symbol of Yoruba musical heritage, passing on the deep-rooted traditions of talking drums and cultural rhythms.
His passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy as Ibadan’s legendary drummer will live on in the hearts of those who cherished his craft.
