The Nigerian entertainment industry is mourning the loss of a true legend. Veteran Nollywood actor Dr. Kola Oyewo has passed away at the age of 80. His death was confirmed on Friday, June 12, 2026, by colleague Kunle Afod and later by family members.

Born March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Oyewo began his acting journey in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group . Over six decades, he became one of the most respected figures in Yoruba theatre and Nigerian cinema.

Family members confirmed the veteran Nollywood actor died after a brief illness. His son, Adetoyese Oyewo, announced the news on Facebook, writing about his father’s love, wisdom, and kindness. In April 2026, Oyewo had publicly revealed he was struggling with prostate enlargement, though the family did not confirm this as the official cause.

Colleague Kunle Afod shared the news on Instagram: “Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow. His remarkable talent, timeless performances, and immense contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry will never be forgotten”.

Oyewo gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Odewale in Ola Rotimi’s classic play “The Gods Are Not to Blame”. He also appeared in acclaimed productions including “Saworoide,” “Sango,” “Koseegbe,” and “Super Story”.

Beyond acting, he built a distinguished academic career. He earned a doctorate in Drama from the University of Ibadan and taught at Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer’s University, and Elizade University . Earlier this year, President Bola Tinubu called him a “national treasure” as he celebrated his 80th birthday.

The family thanked well-wishers for their prayers and support. His death follows the recent losses of actors Adeshina “Janmole” Oshin and Fesogboye Oyewole . May his soul rest in peace.
