The competition for Best Rap Song and Performance is fierce this year, but Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” stands as the undeniable frontrunner. Topping the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks and transforming from a feud-fueled track into a cultural anthem, the track seems destined to dominate the night. Despite its association with Drake’s highly publicized lawsuit against UMG, its popularity and impact make it the clear favorite.
Lamar, who already boasts four wins in this category, could further cement his legacy by breaking a tie with Jay-Z and claiming the second-most wins ever in the category. He’s also up for “Like That”, a collaboration with Future, Metro Boomin, and Kobe Hood that ignited his publicized feud with Drake. If “Like That” wins, it would give Future and Metro their long-awaited first victories in this category, and further Lamar’s already stellar record.
However, the possibility of a vote split between Lamar’s two tracks might open the door for Kanye West’s “Carnival”. As part of ¥$ alongside Ty Dolla $ign, Ye’s track became his first Hot 100 chart-topper in years. Given his historic dominance in this category — with seven wins from 17 nominations — the Recording Academy could lean toward rewarding the veteran, especially with collaborators Playboi Carti and Rich the Kid contributing to the hit.
Rapsody’s “Asteroids” and GloRilla’s “Yeah Glo!” round out the nominees. Rapsody, the sole writer on “Asteroids”, represents a strong artistic presence, but her absence in the Best Rap Album category signals a lack of broader support. Meanwhile, GloRilla’s “Yeah Glo!” earned her a first songwriting nod and highlights her breakout year, but she’s unlikely to overcome such heavyweight competition.
Prediction: Kendrick Lamar, “Not Like Us”
Look Out For: Future, Metro Boomin & Kendrick Lamar, “Like That”
This year’s awards could mark yet another milestone for Lamar while solidifying his dominance in the rap category. Stay tuned to see if he takes home the gold!
