The diamond-encrusted crown of thorns worn by rapper Kendrick Lamar has garnered massive global attention, not just for its powerful symbolism, but for its staggering cost. The headpiece, a collaboration between the rapper’s creative company pgLang and luxury jeweler Tiffany & Co., is valued at a whopping $3 million, making it one of the most expensive pieces in hip-hop history.
The one-of-a-kind piece is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, featuring over 8,000 cobblestone micro pavé diamonds that total more than 137 carats. It took four Tiffany artisans over 1,300 hours of labor across ten months to assemble the crown, which is made from polished titanium. The intricate design includes 50 individual thorns and was sculpted in New York before assembly in Italy.
The piece, which first appeared on the cover of his album Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, is deeply rooted in religious iconography. Lamar and pgLang co-founder Dave Free intended the Kendrick Lamar Diamond Crown to represent perseverance, humility, and the burden of fame. Lamar stated he wears the crown as a symbol of “one of the greatest prophets to ever walk the Earth.”
