Middlesbrough has officially secured the signing of Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho on a loan deal from Sevilla. The Championship club completed the transfer on winter deadline day, with an option to make the move permanent in the summer.
Iheanacho, 28, was unveiled at the Riverside Stadium ahead of Middlesbrough’s clash with Sunderland on Monday night, sparking excitement among fans eager to see him in action. The club fought off stiff competition from Celtic and Leeds United, both of whom had expressed interest in signing the Nigerian striker.
His arrival comes as a crucial replacement for Emmanuel Latte Lath, who is on the verge of joining Atlanta United. Despite considering permanent replacements, Middlesbrough opted for a loan move due to inflated prices in the market as the transfer window closed.
A Fresh Start After a Tough Spell in Spain
Iheanacho’s time at Sevilla has been underwhelming. Since joining from Leicester City last summer, he failed to score in nine La Liga appearances but managed to net three goals in the Copa del Rey. With limited opportunities in Spain, the Nigerian forward turned down offers from PAOK, Panathinaikos, and Venezia, instead opting for a return to English football.
Reports indicate that Middlesbrough will cover almost the entire €2 million wages owed to Iheanacho by Sevilla for the remainder of the season.

Middlesbrough currently sits seventh in the Championship table with 44 points from 29 matches, just outside the playoff spots. With promotion to the Premier League in sight, the club hopes Iheanacho can rediscover his scoring form and make a significant impact in the final stretch of the season.
This move also reunites the Nigerian striker with English football, where he previously excelled for Manchester City and Leicester City, winning the FA Cup with the latter in 2021.
