Two weeks into its theatrical run, Sony’s Karate Kid: Legends is fighting an uphill battle at the box office. While fans have shown their love, the reboot is still struggling to reach its first major milestone, stalling at $90 million globally — split evenly between domestic and international markets.
Unfortunately, the timing couldn’t have been worse for the franchise revival. Box office competition has been relentless. The film has been crowded out by a wave of high-profile releases including:

• Disney’s Lilo & Stitch live-action remake
• Ballerina, the John Wick spinoff
• Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon reboot
• A24’s buzzworthy romcom Materialists
With such massive titles hitting theaters one after another, Karate Kid: Legends dropped out of the top five this weekend.
Mixed Critical Reception, Warm Audience Love
While the critics have been lukewarm — the film sits at 58% on Rotten Tomatoes, with Collider calling it “consistently entertaining” — audiences have shown much more enthusiasm. Viewers gave it a stellar 92% audience rating, praising the movie for blending nostalgic charm with fresh storytelling.
But unfortunately, positive word-of-mouth wasn’t enough to spark a major surge at the box office.
Modest Earnings Compared to Previous Films
So far, Legends has earned:
• $45 million in the U.S.
• $45 million from international markets
• $90 million total worldwide
While this technically puts it ahead of cult classics like John Wick (2014) and The Mechanic, it pales in comparison to the 2010 reboot starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan, which grossed over $350 million worldwide and opened with $55 million domestically — in just one weekend.
A Familiar Cast Can’t Guarantee Franchise Fire
Directed by Jonathan Entwistle, Karate Kid: Legends stars Ben Wang as the newcomer, while Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan reprise their beloved roles from previous installments. The film was made on a modest $45 million budget, so it’s likely to break even, but it’s a far cry from the kind of hit that would greenlight an immediate sequel.
Sony may need to rethink its strategy for the franchise — Legends shows that nostalgia isn’t enough, especially when the competition is fierce.
For now, Karate Kid: Legends remains a film loved by fans but struggling to find its footing in a blockbuster-saturated summer.
