Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has weighed in on the trending controversy surrounding an alleged N1 million bride price demand that led to the collapse of marriage talks in his hometown, Mbaise, Imo State.
The viral video showed a frustrated groom’s family member expressing outrage over the hefty bride price, which ultimately made them abandon the marriage process. The incident sparked heated debates online, with many accusing the Southeastern region of placing high financial demands on marriage ceremonies.
Reacting to the claims, Kanayo defended his hometown, stating that bride price in Igbo land is relative and varies from family to family based on the value they place on their daughters.
In a video shared on Instagram, the actor dismissed the stereotype that Mbaise women come with expensive marriage demands, adding that such practices are not peculiar to his people.
“Bride price is relative in Igbo land and varies from family to family. It is also dependent on the value attracted by the girl… It is not peculiar to Ndi Mbaise. Ihe Mbaise ji ka Mba,” he captioned the post.
His statement has since sparked mixed reactions online, with some netizens agreeing with his stance while others shared their personal experiences regarding bride price traditions across Nigeria.
