Jurassic World: Rebirth – How Steven Spielberg’s Return Helped Revive the Franchise

The Jurassic franchise is roaring back to life — and this time, it’s got its original DNA intact. In a new interview, Jurassic World: Rebirth writer David Koepp revealed that none other than Steven Spielbergplayed a major role in shaping the upcoming film — and that’s exactly what convinced him to come back to the dino-filled universe.

Koepp, who famously penned Jurassic Park (1993) and The Lost World (1997), said Spielberg was “deeply involved” from day one of Rebirth.

“That was one of the reasons I most wanted to do it,” Koepp told Deadline. “Steven was deeply involved from the beginning, and for the six months we were working on the script, it was really just him and me… When you have Steven’s full attention, the results can be pretty spectacular.”

A New Era of Dino Danger

Set to hit theaters on July 2, 2025Jurassic World: Rebirth stars Scarlett JohanssonJonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali in a thrilling new chapter that brings covert operatives face-to-face with weaponized dinosaurs and a biotech conspiracy with roots deep in the original Jurassic legacy.

Directed by Gareth Edwards, the film has been billed as a reset — a return to the “spirit of the first movie” that made audiences fall in love with dinosaurs all over again. Koepp confirmed that this wasn’t a continuation, but a fresh start with fresh characters — and plenty of prehistoric chaos.

“You don’t often get that chance, where they give you very few guidelines, except: there must be dinosaurs in it,” Koepp joked.

Koepp’s Creative Conditions

Before saying yes, the legendary screenwriter had three non-negotiable conditions for Universal Pictures:

1. No retcons: “The events of the previous six movies cannot be denied or contradicted.”

2. Real science only: Scientific integrity had to remain intact.

3. Humour is oxygen: The film needed to breathe — and entertain.

Back to Where It All Began

Returning to the franchise after decades felt surreal for Koepp.

“It even smelled the same,” he said. “Writing those first two movies was one of my favourite experiences in my career so far.”

He described Rebirth as a unique opportunity to reinvent the tone and characters — saying that every three films is a good time to recalibrate the franchise.

And with Spielberg’s legacy guiding the vision, there’s hope that Rebirth will not only thrill longtime fans but introduce a new generation to the awe, wonder, and terror that defined the original films.
