Olympian Junelle Lyles is speaking out after her husband, Noah Lyles, faced intense online criticism for his reaction to her wedding dress. The viral clip showed the sprinter saying, “Oh wow, okay. I didn’t think you would go with a princess dress,” sparking immediate wedding dress backlash across social media platforms.
The couple married on April 4 in Trenton, Georgia, at a “All Shades of Melanin” themed ceremony. Days later, a TikTok from photographer Stanlo Photography ignited controversy. But Junelle Lyles breaks silence with a powerful truth: the wedding day was emotionally devastating before she even walked down the aisle.
Multiple family members, including sisters, nieces, and a childhood best friend, were denied visas to attend. Her mother passed away in 2021. Then, five minutes before the first look, Junelle learned that a key person for the ceremony had failed to show up.
“I went out there basically holding back tears,” she revealed.
When Noah turned around and made his matter-of-fact observation about the princess-style gown, a departure from her usual fitted style, he wasn’t being cold. He was pulling her back from the edge.
“That reaction that I got from Noah is exactly what I needed because he tried to make me happy,” Junelle explained. “If he did not do that, I would probably be shut off that whole wedding” .
The wedding dress backlash assumed a one-minute clip told the whole story. Junelle wants the world to know otherwise. Noah acknowledges her beauty every single day, she said. One viral moment doesn’t define a relationship built since 2017 .
“In that moment, that dress, that hair, that makeup did not matter,” she said. “All I wanted was to feel comfortable. All I wanted was to laugh, to smile”.
