In a major update from Paramount’s CinemaCon 2026 presentation, it appears the third installment of the Top Gun franchise will be taking flight with a new pilot in the director’s chair. Joseph Kosinski, the visionary behind the $1.5 billion blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick, will reportedly not return for Top Gun 3. The news of the Top Gun 3 director Joseph Kosinski exit 2026 has forced Paramount and producer Jerry Bruckheimer to begin a high-stakes search for a successor to helm the next chapter of Tom Cruise’s legendary aviation saga.
The primary reason for Kosinski’s departure is not creative differences, but a “super busy” production schedule that has the director booked for years. Kosinski’s stock has soared since Maverick, and he is currently juggling multiple massive projects that leave little room for another high-octane Top Gun shoot:
• F1: Kosinski is finishing work on the Brad Pitt-led racing epic for Apple.
• UFO Thriller: He is currently developing a top-secret extraterrestrial thriller, also for Apple.
• Miami Vice: He is attached to direct a highly anticipated reboot for Universal starring Michael B. Jordan.
With Top Gun 3 entering active development, Paramount reportedly decided to look for a new director rather than wait for Kosinski’s schedule to clear in late 2027 or 2028.
According to reports from Puck, Paramount and Jerry Bruckheimer have already begun approaching top-tier talent agencies to find a replacement. The studio is looking for a filmmaker who can handle the grueling practical effects and IMAX-heavy demands of the franchise.
• Christopher McQuarrie: A natural choice given his long-standing partnership with Tom Cruise on the Mission: Impossible films and his work co-writing the Top Gun 3 script.
• Rising Action Auteurs: Industry insiders suggest Paramount may look for a director with experience in large-scale practical action, similar to the jump Kosinski made from Tron: Legacy to Maverick.
Despite the director change, the core “team” remains intact. Paramount confirmed at CinemaCon that the script is currently being penned by Ehren Kruger (who co-wrote Maverick). The story is expected to see Tom Cruise return as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, likely alongside Miles Teller (Rooster) and Glen Powell (Hangman). Kosinski recently teased a potential storyline involving an “existential crisis” for Maverick, though it remains to be seen if the new director will follow that vision or chart a new course for the fighter pilot’s “last ride.”
