Johnny Depp has once again made it clear: he’s done with grudges, bitterness, and the emotional baggage that comes with hate.
The Pirates of the Caribbean star opened up in a raw, reflective interview with The Telegraph, sharing how he’s moved past the years of personal and professional turmoil that stemmed from his legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard.
“To Hate, You Have to Care First”
Depp, 61, said he refuses to be consumed by anger, despite years of intense public scrutiny and career damage following Heard’s now-infamous 2018 op-ed, in which she described herself as a victim of domestic abuse. That article led to Depp suing for defamation — a courtroom saga that captivated global attention.
Speaking candidly, he told the outlet:
“One can simply hold hate [until it] inspires some species of malice in your skull… But hating someone is a great big responsibility to hang on to… The real truth of it, that I won’t allow, is that in order for me to hate, I have to care first. And I don’t care. What should I care about?”
“I Didn’t Want a Lie to Decide My Career”
Depp made it clear his decision to go to court wasn’t about revenge — it was about truth and reputation.
“I didn’t want a lie to be the deciding factor of whether or not I have the capability of making movies in Hollywood,” he stated, acknowledging the career fallout he faced.
The actor had previously described that period as being stuck in “the wilderness,” a term he reiterated in a separate interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
“It was a vast wilderness and ultimately that vast wilderness taught me a whole lot,” he said. “Some of it was not the most beautiful time, some of it was hilarious. Some of it was mad. The thing is, it simply just was, and it simply just is.”
No Room for Resentment
Depp’s attitude today? Pure detachment and peace of mind.
“I don’t have any ill feelings toward anyone. I don’t have this great reserve of hatred, because hatred requires caring. Why carry that baggage?”
He added that while he would have preferred not to endure those difficult years, they ended up being a journey of personal growth.
“Going through all that in real time amounted to seven or eight years. It was a harsh, painful internal journey… But I learnt far more than I ever dreamed I could.”
A New Chapter
With a renewed perspective, Johnny Depp appears focused on healing, growth, and moving forward — without bitterness. For fans, it’s not just the revival of an actor’s career, but the redemption of a man who’s refused to let hate define him.
