Longtime MasterChef host John Torode has officially been sacked by the BBC following the conclusion of an independent investigation into an allegation that he used “an extremely offensive racist term” in the workplace.

The 59-year-old celebrity chef, who has fronted the hit cooking show alongside Gregg Wallace for nearly two decades, now follows in his former co-host’s footsteps, after Wallace was also fired earlier this month over a string of misconduct complaints.

BBC Confirms Allegation Was Substantiated

In a formal statement, a BBC spokesperson confirmed the decision:

“John Torode has identified himself as having an upheld allegation of using racist language against him.

This allegation — which involves an extremely offensive racist term being used in the workplace — was investigated and substantiated by the independent investigation led by law firm Lewis Silkin.

The BBC takes this upheld finding extremely seriously. We will not tolerate racist language of any kind. We have informed Banijay UK, the producers of MasterChef, that action must be taken. John Torode’s contract will not be renewed.”

Torode Responds: “No Recollection” of Incident

Taking to Instagram, Torode admitted he was the subject of the investigation but insisted he had no memory of the alleged event, which is said to have taken place in 2018 or 2019 during a social setting:

“The allegation is that I used racial language on one occasion. I have no recollection of this. The individual reportedly did not believe it was said with malicious intent and that I apologised immediately.

I am shocked and saddened. I want to be clear: I do not condone or accept any form of racial language. It is wholly unacceptable in any environment.”

Despite his denial, the independent probe found the claim credible, leading to the BBC’s swift decision to sever ties.

End of an Era for MasterChef

Torode, who became a household name through his role on MasterChef, was known for his charismatic critiques and dynamic chemistry with Wallace. The duo helped transform the show into one of Britain’s most successful reality formats, spawning international versions and celebrity spin-offs.

However, the show’s future is now in question, with both main presenters dismissed within weeks of each other. Gregg Wallace was sacked earlier this month after 45 separate allegations of inappropriate behaviour on set were upheld.

What’s Next for MasterChef?

Banijay UK has yet to announce replacement hosts or confirm the show’s future. Industry insiders suggest the BBC may reboot the series with fresh faces and a renewed commitment to a respectful workplace culture.

As one source told the Guardian:

“It’s a painful but necessary reset for a show that’s been iconic for years. The public will demand transparency and accountability.”

For now, MasterChef fans are left reflecting on the end of a long chapter in the show’s history — and wondering who will step up next.
