John Sterling, the legendary radio voice of the New York Yankees for 36 seasons, died on Monday at the age of 87. WFAN Sports Radio, where Sterling called games for decades, announced the death of the broadcasting icon whose signature calls became ingrained in baseball history.
From “It is high, it is far, it is GONE!” to the unmistakable victory cry of “YANKEES WIN! THAAAAAAAA YANKEES WIN!” Sterling’s voice was the constant companion for generations of fans through five World Series championships and seven American League pennants.
The John Sterling Yankees broadcaster story began in 1989, when the New York native took over play-by-play duties. Over the next three and a half decades, he became as much a Yankee institution as Monument Park itself.
Sterling called 5,420 regular-season games and 211 postseason contests, for a total of 5,631 Yankees games in his career. His ironman streak of 5,060 consecutive games ran from September 1989 until July 2019, when illness finally forced him to miss a series.
His final game behind the microphone came on April 7, 2024, an 8-3 Yankees victory over Toronto before his retirement later that month.
Sterling retired early in the 2024 season, citing the toll of travel and the grueling baseball schedule . He suffered a heart attack in January 2026 but was reportedly in good spirits during recovery before his passing.
Looking back on his career after announcing his retirement, Sterling reflected: “I am a very blessed human being. I have been able to do what I wanted, broadcasting for 64 years. As a little boy growing up in New York as a Yankees fan, I was able to broadcast the Yankees for 36 years. It’s all to my benefit, and I leave very, very happy”.
Beyond the victory proclamation, Sterling became famous for crafting unique home run calls tailored to each Yankees player — a tradition that made every blast feel personal. He spent his final two decades in the booth alongside longtime partner Suzyn Waldman, creating one of the most beloved duos in sports broadcasting.
WFAN called Sterling “a WFAN and Yankees radio icon whose voice was synonymous with an entire generation of Yankee fandom”.
John Sterling didn’t just broadcast baseball. He made baseball feel like poetry. His calls turned routine fly balls into moments and home runs into legends. For 36 years, if you closed your eyes and listened, summer sounded exactly like him. The Yankees will never sound the same. But his voice? That lives forever.
