The man who helped rescue and rebuild one of music’s most valuable estates is gone. John McClain, the co-executor of the Michael Jackson estate, has died at 71. Sources confirm he passed away in Malibu after several years of illness, though the exact cause has not been disclosed.

Long before McClain became a key figure in Michael Jackson’s posthumous legacy, he was already a legend in the music industry. As an A&R executive at A&M Records, he oversaw Janet Jackson’s breakthrough album Control, a record that transformed her from Michael’s little sister into a pop powerhouse in her own right.

He also pushed the label to take chances on unconventional acts, including Mark Wahlberg’s Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch. His ear for talent was undeniable. He produced hits not just for the Jacksons but also for Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, moving between pop, hip-hop, and R&B with ease.

When Michael Jackson died in 2009, his financial situation was dire. Decades of lavish spending, legal battles, and unpaid loans had left the singer hundreds of millions of dollars in debt. McClain and attorney John Branca were appointed co-executors of the Michael Jackson estate, and the two got to work immediately.

They did not just stabilize the finances. They reversed them entirely. Through a series of smart licensing deals, posthumous album releases, and multimedia projects, the estate paid off every dollar of debt and grew into a billion-dollar empire.

Under McClain and Branca’s leadership, the estate spearheaded the Michael biopic, a Broadway musical centered on Jackson’s life and music, a long-running Cirque du Soleil production, and the concert film This Is It, which documented Jackson’s preparation for his final doomed tour.

McClain also had a direct hand in the music itself. He helped produce posthumous hits including “Love Never Felt So Good” and “Much Too Soon,” ensuring that unreleased material reached fans in a polished and respectful manner.

McClain was 71 years old. His death marks the end of an era for the Michael Jackson estate, though Branca continues as sole executor. The empire they built together remains intact. But the partnership that turned a bankrupt legacy into a global powerhouse has lost one half.

For fans of Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, and the golden era of A&R-driven pop music, McClain was a behind-the-scenes giant. He never sought the spotlight. But without him, some of the biggest moments in pop culture history might never have happened.
