Strictly Come Dancing star Johannes Radebe is about to have his incredible life story brought to screens, with BBC Films officially on board to develop a feature-length biopic based on his journey from the township of Zamdela, South Africa, to the glittering stages of British primetime television.
A Story of Triumph Against All Odds
The beloved choreographer and dancer, who moved to the UK in 2018, has been open about his difficult upbringing marked by homophobic bullying in school. Now, he hopes his story will serve as a beacon of hope for others from similarly marginalized backgrounds.
“It’s a ‘pinch me’ moment,” Johannes told The Sun’s TVBiz column.
“BBC Films have just jumped on board. It simply means that my people, who helped me get where I am, are worthy and they can dream — because I know where they come from.”
From Jojo: Finally Home to Film
The upcoming film will be adapted from Johannes’ 2023 autobiography, Jojo: Finally Home, where he intimately detailed his struggles and triumphs — from dancing barefoot in township streets to competing on the Strictly ballroom floor.
He previously hinted at this dream becoming reality during a conversation with Clara Amfo at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London, where he said:
“I could not have dreamt that one day people would be reading about my life story… The thing I am most looking forward to right now is that we have an opportunity to turn this book into a film.”
Empowering a New Generation
Johannes hopes the film will shine a light on underrepresented voices and provide inspiration to others who feel overlooked or silenced.
“There are a lack of role models and they feel like they can’t achieve anything, but I hope this is like a beacon of light for them… My success is your success.”
Still Shining on Strictly
Despite the demands of the upcoming movie and his ongoing UK tour with Kinky Boots, Johannes has confirmed he will return for the 2025 season of Strictly Come Dancing.
From township dreams to BBC spotlight, Johannes Radebe’s story is a powerful reminder that authenticity, resilience, and talent can take you anywhere — and soon, the world will be watching his journey unfold on screen.
