Jesse Tyler Ferguson has opened up about the unexpected backlash he received from members of the LGBTQ+ community for his portrayal of Mitchell Pritchett on Modern Family.
Speaking on the Dinner’s On Me podcast, the 49-year-old actor reflected on his time on the beloved sitcom, which ran from 2009 to 2020. While the show broke ground for its portrayal of a same-sex couple on primetime television, Jesse revealed that not everyone in the queer community embraced his character.
“The criticism that I think I heard the loudest was always from the gay community,” he said. “Feeling as if, maybe, I didn’t represent their idea of what a gay relationship was, or a gay man was.”
Despite the criticism, Jesse said he tried not to take it personally.
“I took it with such a grain of salt, because I’m representing one person. I’m in charge of this one character,” he added.
Fame as a Form of Protection
Ferguson also discussed how Modern Family changed his real-life experiences with homophobia. In a powerful moment from the podcast, he recalled two very different visits to Las Vegas — one before the show aired, and one after.
“I sort of got gay bashed a little bit,” he said of his earlier visit. “It wasn’t anything violent, but there was negative energy coming at me…”
However, things shifted dramatically after he became a familiar face on TV.
“They would recognise me from being… that gay one from TV,” he said. “There was some weird superpower that I felt like I was being protected by this role.”
Jesse described it as a “coat of armour” that made him feel safe in situations where he might otherwise have felt vulnerable.
His comments reflect the complex relationship between media representation and real-world identity—where even groundbreaking roles can spark both praise and critique within the same community.
