Japan Hits Record 9 Million Vacant Homes as Population Shrinks

Japan now has a record 9 million vacant homes as its population continues to shrink. According to new government data, about 14% of all homes in the country are empty, a figure that has climbed steadily over the past decade. The Japan vacant homes crisis is driven by two converging forces: older owners dying and younger people abandoning rural areas for major cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya.

The problem is most acute in rural regions, where entire neighborhoods have been hollowed out. Many of these abandoned properties, known as akiya, fall into disrepair and become safety hazards, attracting pests and sometimes crime. Local governments have tried to address the issue through tax incentives, demolition subsidies, and programs that offer homes for free or for nominal fees to anyone willing to renovate and live in them. Some municipalities have even launched “vacant home banks” that match empty properties with interested buyers.

Despite these efforts, the number keeps rising. Japan’s population has declined for more than a decade, and the country is projected to lose nearly a third of its residents by 2070. Experts say the vacant home crisis is a symptom of a larger demographic challenge that will reshape the country’s infrastructure, economy, and social fabric for generations to come.
