James Gunn Says New DCU Will Be Viewer-Friendly: Superman, Supergirl & Peacemaker to Stand Alone — But Still Connect

James Gunn is redefining how fans experience superhero stories. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the co-head of DC Studios clarified how the upcoming DC Universe (DCU)projects like SupermanSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Peacemaker Season 2 will work as standalone experiences—while still feeding into a broader, unified narrative.

“You Don’t Need to Watch One to Understand the Other”

Gunn made it clear that while Superman will be a central pillar in the DCU’s “Gods and Monsters” chapter, viewers won’t be required to watch it before diving into other titles like Supergirl or Peacemaker.

“Even though there’s a lot of stuff in Superman that leads to Peacemaker, you certainly don’t need to see it to see Peacemaker,” Gunn explained.

“Same applies to Supergirl — viewers can enjoy it without having watched Superman first.”

This signals a shift from the dense, interwoven structure that defined the later stages of the MCU, where missing one installment could leave fans confused.

A More Accessible DC Universe

Gunn is focusing on optional connections, not mandatory viewing.

“I am really trying to be careful that anybody can dip in and see the story that is up next and not feel like they’re missing information,” he said.

Think of it as a “choose-your-own-path” superhero journey: if you want to follow the overarching saga, it’s there. But if you’re only interested in Supergirl’s cosmic journey or Peacemaker’s wild antics, you can enjoy them in isolation.

TV Series Will Help Viewers Stay Up to Speed

To keep things smooth for casual or new viewers, Gunn revealed that DCU television episodes will feature a “Previously in the DCU” recap at the start. This allows for easy jumping in without the pressure of catching up on the entire slate.

Release Dates & What’s Next

Superman – July 11, 2025

Peacemaker Season 2 – August 21, 2025

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow – (Date TBA, but already wrapped)

All three will exist independently, but also serve as pieces of a larger puzzle for those who want to follow every beat of the new DCU.

Bottom Line: James Gunn is building a DCU that balances standalone storytelling with optional world-building—making it easier for both hardcore fans and casual viewers to jump in wherever they choose.
