As DC Studios gears up to launch its new cinematic universe, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is already shaping up to be one of its boldest entries—and much of that comes down to one man: Lobo, played by Jason Momoa.
In a recent episode of the DC Studios Showcase Official Podcast, DC co-head James Gunn broke down how the intergalactic bounty hunter will serve as a crucial pillar in Supergirl’s story, giving fans a deeper look into how the live-action adaptation will differ from its comic book source material.
“The truth is that Woman of Tomorrow in the comics is very much… a bunch of little stories,” Gunn said. “We needed to create one throughline, one three-act story—a more traditional story. So Lobo helps us do that.”
Lobo Isn’t a Mix — He

Gunn made it clear that Lobo isn’t a reworked character or composite, but his own standalone force. “He’s a totally separate character. He’s himself,” Gunn emphasized.
Describing him as “maybe the biggest comic book character that’s never been in a film”, Gunn added, “I love Lobo. I always thought he was a great character to adapt.”
This marks a significant shift for Jason Momoa, who previously portrayed Aquaman in the DCEU. His casting as Lobo—an ultra-violent, cigar-chomping Czarnian outlaw—marks a grittier turn and a central figure in DC’s new Gods and Monsters chapter.
Lobo Anchors the Plot, Supergirl Drives It
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, adapted from the acclaimed comic by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, stars Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) as Kara Zor-El. The story follows Supergirl on a revenge mission across the cosmos, hunting Krem of the Yellow Hills, who will be played by Matthias Schoenaerts.
Krem, while a lesser-known character, catalyzes the plot. But it’s Lobo, according to Gunn, who gives the movie its structure and narrative momentum.
Star Power & Stakes
Though Schoenaerts is a strong dramatic actor, Gunn acknowledged the casting of Momoa as a strategic move to inject the film with both commercial draw and narrative weight. In short: Lobo is a scene-stealer, and Momoa’s larger-than-life charisma helps expand Supergirl’s corner of the DCU.
The film, directed by Craig Gillespie (Cruella, I, Tonya) and written by Ana Nogueira, will serve as a major entry in the new DCU timeline. Nogueira is also working on a Teen Titans script, signaling DC’s commitment to layered, interconnected storytelling.
