James Gunn Opens Up on Why Henry Cavill Was Let Go from Superman Role

Following the critical and commercial success of his Superman reboot, director James Gunn has shed new light on the controversial decision to not bring back Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel, despite early announcements suggesting otherwise.

In a candid conversation on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gunn revealed the behind-the-scenes confusion that unfolded during his transition into the leadership of DC Studios. He disclosed that while plans for a new Superman film with a new lead actor were already in motion, some corners of the studio jumped ahead and publicly declared Cavill’s return — causing what he called a “really unfair” situation.

“The day our DC deal closed, all of a sudden, they were announcing that Henry was back,” Gunn explained. “And I’m like, what is going on? We know what the plan is. The plan was to come in and do Superman [with a new actor].”

Gunn emphasized that the mixed signals didn’t reflect the actual creative direction of the newly formed DC Universe (DCU). According to him, the misleading announcement was driven by another sector of the studio trying to push their own vision — a vision that was never aligned with his or co-head Peter Safran’s plans.

Gunn Personally Spoke with Cavill

Determined to handle the matter with respect, Gunn said he and Safran chose to speak directly to Cavill rather than let the press break the news.

“Peter and I sat down and talked to him. He was an absolute gentleman, a great guy about it,” Gunn said. “He only asked that he be allowed to reveal it himself instead of it coming from us.”

Cavill, who portrayed Superman in three DC films between 2013 and 2017, including Man of Steeland Justice League, made his exit from the role with grace — but fans were left with mixed emotions over the change.

Cavill Might Still Return — In Another Role?

Despite the recasting, Gunn didn’t shut the door completely on Cavill’s future in the DCU. He hinted that there could still be opportunities for the British actor down the line — perhaps in a different character or film.

“He’s a great guy,” Gunn repeated. “There’s always a possibility for something else.”

David Corenswet Takes the Cape

Now, the Superman mantle belongs to David Corenswet, who headlines Gunn’s newly released film that hit cinemas on July 11, 2025. The movie has been praised for breathing new life into the DC franchise, with standout performances from:

Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor

Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane

Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen

Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho

Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific

Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner

Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl

Early reviews have hailed the film as a return to hopeful, character-driven storytelling — a signature of Gunn’s superhero approach.
