Ice-T is officially back in the SVU squad room full-time. The legendary rapper and actor revealed during an appearance on “The TMZ Podcast” that he will appear in every episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’s upcoming 28th season. The news comes after a reduced presence in season 27, a decision he says was made to accommodate Kelli Giddish’s return as Amanda Rollins. “It’s just basically business,” Ice-T explained, noting that budget constraints meant producers couldn’t keep both him and Giddish on full-time.
The actor, who has portrayed Detective Odafin “Fin” Tutuola since the show’s second season in 2000, holds no hard feelings about the temporary reduction. He understood management’s decision, especially since “everybody wanted Kelli back” on the program. In fact, the lighter workload gave him the freedom to pursue other ventures and “make beaucoup bucks with all the extra time” he had. When producers approached him about the change, he asked if they were getting rid of him, their response was unequivocal: “No way. We can’t imagine Law & Order without you”.
Season 27 saw Ice-T appear in just four of the first eight episodes, while Giddish appeared in six, a shift that did not go unnoticed by fans. The actor has been with the franchise for over 26 years, making him the show’s second-longest-serving cast member behind Mariska Hargitay. Showrunner Michele Fazekas has also confirmed that Fin will return in a more prominent role, describing him as “almost like the Number 2 for Benson” and hinting at seeing him more in a training capacity.
The upcoming season is expected to maintain the core dynamic between Fin, Captain Olivia Benson, and the rest of the squad as they tackle New York City’s most harrowing cases. With Ice-T fully committed to season 28, fans can expect to see him every week alongside Hargitay and the returning cast. The show was renewed for its 28th season as part of the 2026-2027 TV season, with new episodes set to return this fall.
