Nearly 20 years after the last installment, Ice Cube and Nia Long are hitting the road again. The duo is reuniting for Are They Gone Yet?, the third film in the Are We There Yet? franchise, which is currently in early development after being acquired by Skydance Sports. The original 2005 film and its 2007 sequel Are We Done Yet? grossed more than $156 million worldwide.

Written by Chris Hazzard and Mike Fontana, the new movie will follow Nick as he takes on his biggest challenge yet: grandkids. “We built something special with this franchise. Audiences grew up with Nick Persons, and now Nick’s got grandkids. Time flies,” Ice Cube shared in a statement to Deadline. The project will be produced by Broken Road and CubeVision, with Ice Cube, Todd Garner, and Jeff Kwatinetz serving as producers.

The original Are We There Yet? introduced audiences to Nick Persons, a bachelor who reluctantly agreed to drive his love interest Suzanne’s two kids across the country, only to have his world turned upside down. The sequel followed Nick and Suzanne married and building their dream home in the countryside. The franchise’s success later spawned a TBS sitcom of the same name, which ran for three seasons from 2010 to 2013 starring Terry Crews and Essence Atkins.

The third film arrives as Ice Cube continues to push for other franchise revivals, including a fourth and final Friday film and Ride Along 3. “Partnering with Skydance to bring this story to a new generation is exactly the kind of move CubeVision was built for, and I am excited for the new partnership,” Ice Cube said . Long also expressed enthusiasm on social media, writing, “This should be fun”.
