Frozen fans, brace yourselves: the highly anticipated Frozen 3 won’t hit theaters until 2027. But, according to Josh Gad, the voice of Olaf, the wait is for a good reason. During an appearance on The Spotlight with Jessica Shaw (via People), Gad explained that the creative team is deliberately taking their time to ensure the third installment lives up to its iconic predecessors.
Gad said that the slow progress is a conscious effort to deliver a story that matches the legacy of the first two films. Considering the massive success of Frozen and Frozen 2—both of which became the highest-grossing animated films upon their respective releases—it’s no surprise that the team wants to get it right.
Why the Wait?
Director Jennifer Lee, who recently stepped down as head of Disney Animation to focus on the Frozen franchise, is determined to give the movie the space it needs to evolve organically. Animated films often undergo significant changes during production, and Disney’s approach has always been to refine its stories until they resonate perfectly.
For example, parts of Frozen II didn’t fully come together until late in the process, as shown in the Into the Unknown documentary. Similarly, Toy Story 4 experienced massive rewrites to perfect its narrative. Gad and the team believe this level of dedication will be essential for Frozen 3 to continue the franchise’s legacy of excellence.
Setting the Stage for Frozen 3
Back in 2022, Disney officially announced both Frozen 3 and Frozen 4, building excitement for the future of Anna, Elsa, and Olaf. However, with release schedules for Zootopia 2 (2025) and an unnamed original animated project (2026), Frozen 3 was pushed to 2027, ensuring that Disney can deliver its trademark quality.
Plenty of Frozen Fun in the Meantime
While the wait is long, there’s still plenty of Frozen magic to enjoy. With a Disney+ subscription, fans can revisit the first two films, along with animated shorts like Olaf’s Frozen Adventure and Once Upon a Snowman.
For an even more immersive experience, head to Hong Kong Disneyland and explore the World of Frozen land, which opened in 2024. Another version of the land is set to debut at Disneyland Paris in 2026.
So, while 2027 feels far away, Disney is committed to ensuring that Frozen 3 will be worth the wait, giving fans another unforgettable chapter in the beloved franchise.
