Oyer claims that officials in Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche’s office pressured her to approve the request, and her refusal ultimately led to her dismissal.
The Allegations Against the DOJ
In a report published by the New York Times on March 10, 2025, Oyer detailed her abrupt termination from the Department of Justice (DOJ). While she was not given an official reason, she strongly suspects that her decision not to reinstate Gibson’s firearm rights was a key factor.
According to Oyer, she was initially part of a DOJ initiative reviewing applications from individuals seeking to have their gun rights restored. Out of 95 names, only nine were ultimately recommended for approval. However, before finalizing the list, Oyer received a sudden request from Blanche’s office to add Mel Gibson—a request she firmly rejected.
Why Was Gibson’s Gun Ownership Revoked?
Mel Gibson lost his right to own or carry firearms in 2011 after pleading no contest to a domestic violence misdemeanor involving his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva. Under federal law, individuals convicted of domestic violence offenses are permanently prohibited from possessing firearms.
Pressure from the Trump Administration?
Oyer states that in January 2025, Gibson’s legal team submitted a letter arguing for the restoration of his gun rights, citing his successful career and his recent appointment as a “special ambassador” to Hollywood by President Donald Trump.
After rejecting the request, Oyer claims she received a follow-up call from a superior who urged her to reconsider. She was allegedly told that Gibson had a personal relationship with Trump, implying that this connection should justify his reinstatement.
When she refused to comply, Oyer says she was fired the next day.
