Veteran Nigerian rapper and activist Eedris Abdulkareem has set the record straight about his controversial new track that’s been stirring conversations across political and social spaces. In an interview monitored by Channels Television, the outspoken artist made it clear that his latest release was a direct response to a viral video featuring Seyi Tinubu, not a personal jab at the President’s son.
The track, which has been flagged as “Not To Be Broadcast” (NTBB) by regulatory bodies, tackles sensitive issues about governance under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, drawing mixed reactions from fans and critics alike. But Eedris insists there’s no malice behind the message.
“Seyi Tinubu said in a video while campaigning that his father is the best president. I disagree. I didn’t attack him—I replied him with facts about what his father’s government has done,” Eedris stated.
For the seasoned artist, known for timeless protest hits like “Jaga Jaga”, music is more than entertainment—it’s a platform for activism. He emphasized that the aim of the song was to echo the pain of ordinary Nigerians grappling with inflation, insecurity, and joblessness.
Addressing reports that he was allegedly offered ₦200 million to pull down the track, Eedris didn’t mince words.
“Yes, someone approached me, claiming to be close to the government. But if I wanted to be a billionaire, I’d be singing their praises. That’s not me.”
Eedris also used the moment to encourage fellow musicians and influencers to take a stand on real issues, rather than shy away from controversy. According to him, the true role of artists is to reflect reality, even if it means ruffling feathers.
“My duty is to use music to add value to people’s lives. I don’t create music to incite—only to enlighten,” he said.
With his bold stance, Eedris Abdulkareem remains a voice for the people, unwavering in his mission to use his platform for truth and justice—even in the face of censorship and pressure.
