Ed Sheeran is breathing easier. The Grammy-winning singer opened up about his wife Cherry Seaborn’s health for the first time in months, sharing that she has fully recovered after undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous tumor. The revelation came during a candid March 10 appearance on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast, where Sheeran was asked to name the best and worst days of his life.
The worst, he explained, arrived in February 2022. “Cherry rung me up and said she had cancer.” The diagnosis landed with devastating force. Seaborn was six months pregnant with their daughter Jupiter, at the time. Doctors told the couple the tumor couldn’t be operated on until after she gave birth, leaving them to navigate the final months of pregnancy under a cloud of fear and uncertainty.
That single week carried more grief than most lifetimes. Sheeran was also grappling with the sudden death of his closest friend, music entrepreneur Jamal Edwards, who helped launch his career. Cricket legend Shane Warne died the same week, on the first day of a high-profile copyright infringement lawsuit over Sheeran’s 2017 hit “Shape of You,” which he ultimately won.
“That was probably the worst week because Jamal died that week as well, and then we went straight into a court case. Oh, and then Shane died, first day of the court case.”
Seaborn underwent surgery to remove the tumor after Jupiter’s birth. When asked how she’s doing now, Sheeran’s answer came with visible relief: “She’s fine, she had the operation. And thankfully, touch wood, totally fine.”
The experience left an indelible mark. “It was f***ing scary,” he added.
Sheeran first publicly revealed Seaborn’s diagnosis in his 2023 Disney+ documentary Ed Sheeran: The Sum of It All. Seaborn, who typically avoids the spotlight, explained why she agreed to appear. “I got diagnosed with cancer at the start of the year which was a massive shitter. It made me massively reflect on our mortality. I would never agree to do anything like this, but it made me think, ‘Oh if I died, what’s people’s perception of me? What do you leave behind?’
Songwriting became Sheeran’s outlet. He wrote seven songs in four hours after learning the news. “When something really intense happens to him, he writes a song,” Seaborn said.
In a 2023 Rolling Stone interview, Sheeran opened up about the darker side of that period. “There’s nothing you can do about it. You feel so powerless.” Amid the stress and grief, he admitted feeling like he “didn’t want to live anymore.”
“And I have had that throughout my life. You’re under the waves drowning. You’re just sort of in this thing. And you can’t get out of it.”
He described the emotions as feeling “selfish,” especially as a father. “I feel really embarrassed about it.”
The trauma reframed everything, including the lawsuit that had consumed years of his life. “Everything was building to that for like, eight years. And then suddenly when you’re in the courtroom, it didn’t really matter. I had built it up in my mind and then because of all of those actual heavy life things had happened, when I was in the courtroom I was like, ‘I don’t actually care about the outcome of this.’ Because it’s so small compared.”
Sheeran and Seaborn married in 2019 and share two daughters: Lyra, 5, and Jupiter, 3. Today, Seaborn is healthy, the tumor is gone, and the family is moving forward. The fear remains in the rearview, but the gratitude endures.
