Three Dutch football clubs—Ajax, VVV Venlo, and Roda JC Kerkrade—have come together to raise €170,000 (about ₦272 million) to support former Nigerian international Tijani Babangida and his wife, who are undergoing medical treatment in the Netherlands after a tragic accident earlier this year.
The accident, which occurred in May along the Kaduna-Zaria Road in Nigeria, claimed the lives of Babangida’s one-year-old son, Fadil, and his younger brother, Ibrahim. Babangida, his wife, and their maid sustained severe injuries. After receiving initial treatment at hospitals in Nigeria, the couple traveled to the Netherlands for advanced medical care, aided by Babangida’s former teammates.
Babangida’s wife recently underwent her first major facial surgery, with three more complex procedures and extensive rehabilitation ahead. She also faces a long journey to recover from a paralyzed arm. Babangida, who required knee surgery, is also working on his rehabilitation.
In a touching gesture, Ajax, VVV, and Roda launched a crowdfunding campaign to help cover the couple’s medical expenses, as the €170,000 cost exceeds Babangida’s financial means due to failed investments and projects in Nigeria.
Expressing his heartfelt gratitude, Babangida said, “Fortunately, Ajax, VVV, and Roda have all offered to help me. They joined forces so that everyone can contribute through crowdfunding. This is to pay my wife’s medical expenses. I think that’s very beautiful; I don’t know how to thank them.”
He added, “These guys did everything for me. When I came here, my driver’s license was no longer valid. They took me everywhere—not just to the hospital but also to the rehabilitation center. My wife’s rehabilitation will take months.”
Babangida, a 1996 Olympic gold medalist, enjoyed an illustrious career, playing for Ajax from 1996 to 2003, winning the Eredivisie title and two Dutch Cups, with 20 goals in 77 appearances. Before Ajax, he played for Roda JC from 1991 to 1996 and had a loan stint with VVV Venlo.
The crowdfunding effort, initiated by his former clubs and teammates, has touched hearts worldwide, with fans rallying to support the football icon in his time of need.
