The Duggar family’s dark history has repeated itself. Joseph Duggar, 31, a former star of TLC’s “19 Kids and Counting,” was arrested in Arkansas on March 18 and is awaiting extradition to Florida on charges of lewd and lascivious molestation of a child under 12. The charges stem from alleged incidents during a 2020 family vacation to Panama City Beach, when the victim was just 9 years old. The arrest adds another devastating chapter to the family’s troubled legacy, coming almost five years after his brother Josh was convicted on child pornography charges.
According to an arrest affidavit from the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, the case unfolded after a 14-year-old girl participated in a forensic interview, disclosing multiple incidents of abuse that occurred during the Florida trip when she was 9. Investigators allege that Joseph repeatedly asked the girl to sit on his lap during the vacation. On one occasion, he asked her to sit next to him on a couch and covered them with a blanket. During this time, authorities say he manipulated the victim’s underwear and grazed her genitals, and also rubbed his hands on her thighs.
The alleged abuse stopped only after Joseph reportedly apologized for his actions. The victim’s father later confronted Joseph about the allegations this week, and police say Joseph admitted to the actions, both during that conversation and again during a phone call arranged by detectives.
Joseph Duggar faces two serious felony charges in Florida: lewd and lascivious molestation of a victim under 12 years old, and lewd and lascivious behavior conducted by a person 18 years or older . He was booked into the Washington County Detention Center in Arkansas at 3:59 p.m. on March 18 and is awaiting extradition to Bay County, Florida, where the crimes allegedly occurred. A court appearance is scheduled for March 20 . As of now, no attorney is listed for him in online court records, and the Duggar family has not responded to inquiries.
This arrest is the latest in a long pattern of scandal for the deeply religious reality TV family. In 2015, “19 Kids and Counting” was canceled after revelations that Josh Duggar had molested four of his sisters and a babysitter years earlier, when he was a teenager . Josh later admitted to a pornography addiction and was caught in the Ashley Madison data breach.
In 2022, Josh was sentenced to more than 12 years in federal prison after being convicted on charges of receiving and possessing child sexual abuse material . He is currently serving his sentence at a federal prison in Seagoville, Texas, with a release date scheduled for 2032 . The parallels between the brothers’ cases have shocked fans and renewed scrutiny of the family’s culture and parenting.
Joseph married Kendra Caldwell in September 2017, and their courtship and wedding were documented on the family’s spinoff show “Counting On”. The couple has four children: Garrett (born 2018), Addison (2019), Brooklyn (2021), and Justus (2022). They maintained a joint Instagram account called “The Little Duggar Family,” where they posted photos of their children and family life. Notably, Joseph and Kendra stopped posting on social media in November 2021, roughly a year after the alleged 2020 incident. Their last post was a birthday tribute to their daughter Addison.
Following the arrest, concerned social media users have flooded the comments on the couple’s old Instagram posts. Many are urging Kendra to protect her children and distance herself from Joseph, with one commenter writing, “I really, really hope that you’re smarter than Anna. Get a restraining order on this monster to keep your innocent children away from him permanently”. Others have noted the disturbing pattern within the family, with one user warning, “There is a trend here, please notice it”.
As Joseph awaits extradition to Florida, the legal system will determine whether he faces trial on these charges. If convicted, he could face significant prison time. For the Duggar family, already fractured by years of scandal, this latest blow raises painful questions about what was happening behind closed doors, and whether the pattern of abuse was ever truly broken.
