Drake’s ongoing legal drama with Universal Music Group (UMG) and Spotify has taken another twist as the rapper intensifies his efforts to examine their streaming data. The Toronto superstar believes the two entities colluded to inflate the streaming numbers of Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us.”
After withdrawing an initial legal petition filed in New York, Drake refiled a lawsuit there and later submitted a petition in Texas, where he now resides. Although no lawsuit has been officially filed in Texas yet, UMG has wasted no time attempting to quash the Texas petition.
UMG Moves to Dismiss Drake’s Petition
On Friday, UMG filed a 144-page motion to dismiss Drake’s Texas petition. The label denied any wrongdoing and described Drake’s legal moves as “retaliatory.” UMG is also seeking a suspension of discovery and legal fees, accusing the rapper of engaging in a “strategic legal retaliation” and attempting to limit the distribution of Lamar’s track.
This motion was filed mere days before a scheduled hearing set for January 28 in Bexar County, Texas. Notably, Drake became a Texas resident in August 2024, proudly sharing his new ID on Instagram—duck face and all. The move adds a personal layer to his legal filings in the Lone Star State, a place he’s celebrated in his music for years, with tracks like “Houstatlantavegas” highlighting his affection for the region.
Drake’s Defamation Lawsuit Against UMG
Adding to the tension, Drake is also suing UMG for defamation. UMG was recently granted a 34-day extension to respond to this lawsuit due to wildfires affecting their teams in Los Angeles. The case is set to resume on March 17, further escalating the ongoing feud between Drake and the music giant.
What’s Next?
With the Texas hearing looming and the defamation case still on the table, Drake’s battle with UMG and Spotify shows no signs of slowing down. The January 28 hearing will likely shed more light on the Texas petition, while the defamation case could have broader implications for their relationship.
For now, the feud underscores the complexities of the music industry and raises questions about transparency in streaming metrics. Whatever the outcome, the legal clash between one of music’s biggest stars and its most powerful players is sure to draw attention in the months ahead.
