Drake Sues UMG Over Kendrick Lamar Track, Sparks Debate on Independence(Update)

Earlier this month, Drake made headlines by filing a lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG) over Kendrick Lamar’s track “Not Like Us.” In the suit, Drake accuses UMG of promoting a false and damaging narrative that portrays him as a pedophile. This legal action has ignited widespread debate among fans and industry insiders about the implications for Drake’s career and his relationship with the label giant.

One of the most notable reactions came from Joe Budden during a recent episode of his podcast. Budden argued that Drake has yet to prove he can thrive without the support of a major label, comparing him to Kanye West, who went independent after being dropped by his label over controversial remarks. Speaking on Ye’s success, Budden said:

“That Yeezy brand, he curated that over years. Drake has been the system baby. So we don’t know.”

Budden’s comments didn’t go unnoticed. DJ Akademiks responded during a livestream, offering a mixed take. He acknowledged Budden’s point while adding context about the modern music landscape:

“I agree and disagree with Joe. Independent, like the Tech N9ne method of running a warehouse to print CDs, doesn’t apply anymore. If Drake were to go independent, it’d be about building the right team, not warehouses. Universal may have done some things for him, but not to the extent they do for others. If he leaves, he’ll need to handle everything himself, and that’s a huge task.”

Akademiks also pointed out the significant financial investment required to operate independently, using Kendrick Lamar as an example:

“Kendrick is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars monthly to maintain his career independently. That’s the reality Drake would face too.”

The lawsuit and subsequent discussions have sparked questions about Drake’s potential to succeed outside the traditional label system. As one of the most streamed artists of all time, his departure from UMG would undoubtedly disrupt the industry. However, as Budden and Akademiks highlight, the challenges of independence—especially in a post-streaming era—might test Drake’s ability to maintain his dominance.

With fans and peers divided on the matter, all eyes are on Drake as this legal battle unfolds and speculation about his future grows.
