Dolly Parton ‘Doing Fine’ After Health Scare in First Major Appearance

Dolly Parton is back. The 80-year-old country music legend made her first major public appearance in six months at Dollywood’s season-opening celebration, assuring fans she’s “doing fine” after postponing her Las Vegas residency due to health concerns, a rare and emotional update that revealed how deeply grieving and healing have shaped her past year.

Dressed in a white dress with a floral denim vest, Parton stepped onto the stage at her Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, theme park on March 13 to cheers from thousands of fans. The appearance marked her first in-person public engagement since May 2025, following months of speculation about her well-being after she missed her own 80th birthday tribute concert at the Grand Ole Opry in January and appeared only virtually at events like the 2026 BRIT Awards.

Parton didn’t mince words about her absence. “I’ve not been touring, as you know,” she told the crowd. “I’ve had a few little health issues, and we’re taking good care of them”.

But the deeper revelation came next. The “Jolene” singer connected her physical struggles directly to emotional ones following the death of her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, who passed away in March 2025 at age 82.

“I just kind of got worn down and worn out, grieving over Carl and a lot of other little things going on,” Parton explained. “I just got myself kind of where I needed to build myself back up spiritually, emotionally, and physically. But all is good. It didn’t slow me down”.

Parton initially postponed her Las Vegas residency at Caesars Palace’s Colosseum in September 2025, telling fans doctors required her to undergo “a few procedures” without disclosing specifics. She’d previously dealt with kidney stones that caused an infection, forcing her to cancel a Dollywood appearance.

Her sisters sparked concern in October when they publicly asked for prayers, but Parton quickly reassured fans with a video declaring, “I ain’t dead yet”. She missed accepting her honorary Oscar in person that November, instead sending a video acceptance while standing next to her Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

Onstage alongside Dollywood Company President Eugene Naughton, Parton quickly shut down any speculation about her personal life. After joking that fans might mistake Naughton for her “new husband,” she made her position crystal clear.

“I think Carl Dean’s waiting for me,” she said with characteristic wit. “If I should show up at the pearly gates with somebody else, he would not like that. He’d be saying, ‘Who’s that little pisser? You leave him outside the gates'”.

Far from slowing down, Parton revealed she’s been busier than ever during her recovery. She’s writing new songs for her upcoming Broadway musical “Dolly, A True Original Musical” and working on multiple projects.

“I’ve been doing a lot of writing, a lot of thinking, a lot of praying and a lot of getting ready for a lot of new stuff coming up for the rest of this whole year,” she shared. “So, be ready for me. I ain’t done, I ain’t near done”.

Her Las Vegas residency has been rescheduled for September 2026, and Caesars Palace president Sean McBurney confirmed earlier this year that Parton is “doing well” and the shows remain on track. Dollywood itself is launching its most expensive attraction ever, the hybrid coaster NightFlight Expedition, later this spring.

For fans who worried through months of silence, Parton’s message was simple: “All is good. It didn’t slow me down”.
