Disney has sparked controversy by removing a transgender storyline from Pixar’s upcoming animated series Win or Lose, set to stream in February 2025. The eight-episode series, which follows the lives of middle school softball players, originally featured a transgender character voiced by 18-year-old actress Chanel Stewart.
Stewart, who identifies as transgender, expressed her disappointment over the decision. “From the moment I got the script, I was excited to share my journey to help empower other trans youth,” she said. “Trans stories matter, and they deserve to be heard.”
Her mother, Keisha Stewart, echoed her daughter’s sentiments, calling the move a setback for LGBTQ+ representation. “There may be some parents out there who are not ready to have that conversation, but this is the world we live in. Everyone deserves to be recognized,” Keisha said, adding that such decisions make it harder for transgender people to feel seen and supported.
According to reports, Stewart’s character will remain in Win or Lose, but her gender identity will now reflect that of a cisgender straight girl.
A Disney representative defended the decision, stating, “When it comes to animated content for a younger audience, we recognize that many parents would prefer to discuss certain subjects with their children on their own terms and timeline.”
This decision has ignited a broader conversation about representation in children’s media, with some praising Disney’s sensitivity to parental preferences and others criticizing the removal of diverse stories that could foster inclusivity and understanding.
