Darren Aronofsky is officially set to direct a biopic on Elon Musk, with independent studio A24 securing the rights to Walter Isaacson’s bestselling authorized biography. Known for intense character studies like Black Swan and The Whale, Aronofsky now turns his attention to one of the most controversial and influential figures of the modern era.
A24 emerged victorious in a “highly competitive” bidding war for the book’s film rights, with top studios and filmmakers also in the running. The biopic will be produced by Aronofsky’s production company, Protozoa Pictures, marking his second collaboration with A24 following The Whale. The project is based on Isaacson’s comprehensive biography, published in September 2023, which details Musk’s tumultuous journey from a difficult childhood in South Africa to becoming the world’s richest person.
Isaacson’s book explores Musk’s driven, often chaotic personality, shaped by what his former partner Grimes calls “demon mode”. The biography delves into Musk’s abusive relationship with his father, his relentless pursuit to colonize Mars through SpaceX, and his chaotic $44 billion takeover of Twitter, which he renamed X . The book also highlights his vindictive tendencies toward critics and his demanding “hardcore” leadership style.
Musk himself has publicly endorsed the choice of director, posting on X: “Glad Darren is doing it. He is one of the best”. While Aronofsky’s filmography is heavy with visceral psychological horror films centered on deeply troubled individuals, The Social Network and Steve Jobs, also based on Isaacson’s works, set a precedent for these types of tech biopics .
