Nigerian reggae legend Daddy Showkey has caught the attention of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) after turning an unexpected train delay into an electrifying performance.
Passengers on the Warri-Itakpe train service faced over an hour of waiting due to a refueling stop, but instead of frustration, they got an impromptu reggae show from the veteran musician. Seizing the moment, Daddy Showkey entertained the stranded commuters, transforming what could have been a dull experience into an unforgettable ride.
NRC’s Response: A Special Invitation
Following the viral moment, NRC Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, acknowledged Daddy Showkey’s positive energy and extended an invitation to him to visit the NRC headquarters in Lagos.
“@DrOpeifaKayode invited reggae artiste John Odafe Asimoh, popularly called Daddy Showkey, to the Corporation’s headquarters to brief the management on his recent experience on the Warri-Itakpe Train Service, where he entertained passengers during a short delay caused by refueling,” the NRC’s statement read.
Dr. Opeifa praised Daddy Showkey for using music to uplift passengers during the delay and reaffirmed the corporation’s commitment to improving passenger experience. He encouraged passengers to share feedback via NRC’s customer care portal, stressing the agency’s mission to provide safe, affordable, and efficient rail transport across Nigeria.
Daddy Showkey’s Reaction
Reacting to the invitation, Daddy Showkey expressed his admiration for Dr. Opeifa’s leadership, calling it a testament to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s good judgment in appointing him.
“I have confidence in Dr. Kayode Opeifa’s ability to drive positive change in the railway sector, considering his track record as Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation,” Daddy Showkey said.
While describing his train experience as a mix of highs and lows, he acknowledged the huge potential of the Warri-Itakpe route, highlighting the growing need for increased service frequency to meet passenger and cargo demands.
Accompanied by his manager, Morrison Ovedja, Daddy Showkey also praised rail travel’s affordability and scenic appeal, emphasizing its importance as a viable transportation alternative.
A Step Towards Better Train Services?
With the NRC actively working to enhance train operations nationwide, Daddy Showkey’s spontaneous concert has not only brought smiles to passengers’ faces but also highlighted areas for service improvements. Could this be the push NRC needs to fine-tune the passenger experience? Time will tell, but for now, one thing is certain—train delays have never been this fun!
