Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has sailed to a monumental box office debut, earning $124.5 million domestically in its opening weekend from 3,919 theaters. The adaptation of Homer’s ancient epic marks Nolan’s biggest opening since The Dark Knight Rises in 2012 and stands as the third-largest domestic debut of the year behind only Toy Story 5 ($159 million) and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($131 million). Globally, the film amassed an estimated $264.1 million, surpassing The Dark Knight Rises to become Nolan’s biggest global opening ever.

The nearly three-hour epic, which stars Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside an ensemble cast including Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Anne Hathaway, leaned heavily on premium formats to propel its success. Premium large formats contributed 53% of the film’s domestic tally. IMAX alone accounted for $51.8 million globally, 23% of worldwide ticket sales, marking the company’s best weekend ever. The film, billed as the first feature shot entirely with IMAX cameras, saw such overwhelming demand that theaters added 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. screenings in 70mm, which sold out.

The film’s performance is particularly impressive given its R-rating, which restricts audience access. The rating did not deter audiences, as The Odyssey earned an A CinemaScore and a 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It now stands as the fifth-biggest R-rated opening of all time domestically, behind Deadpool & Wolverine and the Deadpool sequels. With a reported $250 million production budget and an aggressive marketing campaign that began a year in advance, The Odyssey represents one of Hollywood’s most ambitious gambles on a director’s name over established intellectual property, a bet that has paid off handsomely.

As the third-highest debut of 2026, The Odyssey has solidified Nolan’s position as one of the few filmmakers whose name alone can drive audiences to theaters. The film still needs to reach approximately $625 million globally to break even after marketing costs, but its record-setting launch positions it for a strong theatrical run through the summer. With IMAX screens dedicated exclusively to the film for three weeks, the epic’s journey is far from over.
