Captain America: Brave New World, one of the most anticipated MCU releases of the year, has hit a rough patch at the U.S. box office. In its ninth weekend, the film suffered a steep decline in theatrical presence, losing 1,310 theaters nationwide—bringing its total down to just 440 screens.
This dramatic drop led to a major weekend tumble, as the superhero flick earned just $342K, a 75.2% plunge from the previous weekend’s haul. That figure leaves the film at $199.9 million domestically, narrowly missing the $200 million milestone it was expected to cross this week.
Despite the setback, Brave New World has accumulated $413 million globally on a $180 million budget (excluding marketing). However, analysts suggest that the film might only break even through digital and streaming revenue, rather than box office performance.
Directed by Julius Onah, the film sees Anthony Mackie step fully into the role of Captain America, with Harrison Ford debuting as President Thaddeus Ross. The narrative follows Sam Wilson as he uncovers a political conspiracy tied to the newly elected U.S. President. The film also features Danny Ramirez, Liv Tyler, Giancarlo Esposito, Shira Haas, and Carl Lumbly.
While reviews were mixed—with critics calling out its politically dense script and lack of signature MCU-style action—performances by Mackie and Ford were widely praised.
Looking ahead, Mackie will reprise his role in Avengers: Doomsday (May 1, 2026), joining Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal, and others, as the MCU gears up for Secret Wars in 2027.
The next chapter in Marvel’s Phase Five arrives with Thunderbolts on May 2, helmed by Jake Schreier, centering on a rogue team of antiheroes forced into a high-risk mission.
