The “Vocal Bible” is finally telling her full story. During a moving appearance on Good Morning America on Thursday, April 2, 2026, Brandy Norwood opened up about the most defining and devastating relationship of her life: her bond with the late Whitney Houston. As fans celebrate the Brandy memoir Phases release 2026, the R&B icon is pulling back the curtain on the private moments that shaped her legendary career.

In her memoir, Phases, Brandy details a marathon phone call that took place in February 2012, just days before Houston’s tragic passing. Brandy was in Los Angeles rehearsing with Monica for Clive Davis’ legendary Pre-Grammy gala when Houston handed her a handwritten note. That evening, the two spent hours on the phone. “I got to tell her how much she meant to me,” Brandy told GMA. “I told her she inspired me and that I loved her. I didn’t know it was goodbye, but I’m so grateful I said those things.”

Perhaps the most heartbreaking revelation is Brandy’s belief at the time that Houston was entering a healthier chapter. “I really felt she was changing for the better,” Brandy shared. The two had discussed re-establishing their close “Big Sister, Little Sister” dynamic, which had been the cornerstone of Brandy’s early years, particularly during their time filming Cinderella in 1997. Tragically, Houston was found dead at the Beverly Hilton shortly after that call, with authorities later ruling her death an accidental drowning complicated by heart disease and drug use.

While the Houston tribute is a central pillar of the book, Phases doesn’t shy away from other controversial chapters of Brandy’s life. The singer officially confirms her relationship with Boyz II Men star Wanya Morris, revealing they began dating when she was just 16 and he was 22—a relationship that has been a subject of fan speculation for decades. Brandy describes the era as one of intense pressure, balancing the “clean” image of Moesha with the complex realities of her private life.

Phases is available now at all major retailers, marking Brandy’s first venture into long-form autobiography.
