The domestic box office ended 2024 on a high note, defying expectations after the industry-wide strikes of 2023. With a total revenue of $8.7 billion, the box office outperformed early projections by over $700 million, signaling a slow but steady recovery for the film industry. Although this figure is still 3% lower than 2023’s $9 billion haul, it’s a promising step forward following the pandemic’s impact on moviegoing habits.
Disney led the charge with blockbuster hits like Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine, each grossing over $600 million domestically. These two films now rank among the top 15 highest-grossing films of all time, helping Disney cross $2.2 billion in total revenue for the year. The studio’s dominance could grow even further, as Moana 2 nears the $1 billion global milestone.
2024 saw five films debut with over $100 million opening weekends, including Wicked, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and Moana 2. In total, 22 movies surpassed the $100 million mark during their domestic runs, slightly fewer than the 24 films in 2023. Universal followed Disney with $1.8 billion in total revenue, while Warner Bros., Sony, and Paramount rounded out the top five studios.
Despite Disney’s success, not all studios thrived. Lionsgate struggled with a 60% drop in revenue from 2023, with its highest-grossing title, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, failing to reach $40 million. Meanwhile, indie powerhouse A24 had a banner year, increasing its domestic revenue by 50% and crossing $200 million for the first time.
Looking ahead, 2025 is poised to hit the $9 billion mark, with a stacked slate of highly anticipated releases like Jurassic World: Rebirth, Superman, and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Disney is also gearing up for another big year with Captain America: Brave New World, Fantastic Four: First Steps, and Avatar: Fire and Ash expected to deliver massive returns.
Stay tuned as the industry continues its recovery, and fans eagerly anticipate more box office hits in the year ahead!
