In a move that’s left fans stunned, the BBC has confirmed that its critically acclaimed comedy-drama Boarders will come to an end after its upcoming third season — despite boasting a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and rave reviews from audiences and critics alike.
Created by Daniel Lawrence Taylor, Boarders follows five Black teens from inner-city London who receive scholarships to an elite British boarding school, St Gilbert’s. The series explores class, race, identity, and ambition through a witty and emotionally grounded lens, and has been celebrated for its originality and powerful performances from its young cast.
A Bittersweet Goodbye
While fans will be thrilled to know a final season is on the way, the BBC has confirmed that series three — airing in 2026 — will be the last. The upcoming season will consist of six episodes and see the return of Jodie Campbell, Sekou Diaby, Aruna Jalloh, Myles Kamwendo, and Josh Tedeku as the central group of students navigating their final year at St Gilbert’s.
The show’s creator, Daniel Lawrence Taylor, who also plays mentor Gus, will not only reprise his role but also make his directorial debut in the final season. Speaking on the show’s conclusion, he said:
“Boarders has been a deeply personal project for me and it’s been incredible to see how audiences have connected with the characters. From day one, I wanted to create something funny, honest, and proudly Black – and in this final term, I hope to finish their story as they face their final year with greater challenges, deeper friendships and the looming question of life beyond school.”
From Underdogs to Cultural Phenomenon
Boarders first premiered in February 2023 and quickly made waves for its fresh take on British private school life from a Black perspective. Its sharp writing and charismatic cast earned it not only high viewership but also critical acclaim — with The Guardian predicting “future megastars” in the making.
The second season expanded on the story with even more tension, including the rise of Carol Watlington-Geese (Niky Wardley) as acting headteacher and increased inter-school rivalries. The final season is expected to dive deeper into the group’s coming-of-age journey as they grapple with exams, evolving friendships, and their uncertain futures.
A Lasting Legacy
